Dried-Up Lakes and Supersonic Cars: The Bonneville Salt Flats Mystery!

Imagine a place so flat and wide, it feels like the edge of the world! It's where some of the fastest things on Earth zoom by. But how did it get there?

Long, long ago, even before your great-great-grandparents were born, a giant lake called Lake Bonneville covered a huge part of what is now Utah in the USA. Think of it like a super-sized bathtub that stretched for miles and miles! Over thousands of years, the climate changed, it got warmer, and the lake slowly dried up, leaving behind a vast, flat, and super-smooth surface.

What did it leave? Not just mud, but a thick layer of salt! This huge salty plain is now called the Bonneville Salt Flats. It's like nature's own giant, perfectly paved racetrack. Because it's so incredibly flat and hard, with nothing to get in the way, it became the perfect spot for people to try and break speed records.
