Super Soda-Powered Batteries! (Bye-Bye, Tricky Metals?)
Imagine batteries that use ordinary salt instead of rare metals! Get ready for a salty science adventure!
Did you know that many of our gadgets and electric cars use special batteries called lithium-ion batteries? They're super powerful, but they need some rare stuff like lithium and cobalt, which can be tricky to find and sometimes run out.
Scientists are like super detectives, always looking for new ways to make things better! They've been trying to create batteries using something much more common: sodium, which is like the salt you put on your fries!
The problem was, these 'soda-powered' batteries sometimes had a bit of a hiccup, especially with a liquid part inside them called a 'solvent.' Think of the solvent as the juice that helps electricity flow โ if it's not quite right, the battery doesn't work as well or last as long.
