Whoa! Robot Brains Inventing Witnesses in Court?! A Lawyer's Big Oops!
Imagine if a super-smart computer made up stories for you! That's kinda what happened in a real court case, and it caused a HUGE problem!
Picture this: A lawyer is trying to help someone who was found guilty of a crime. To do this, lawyers usually check lots of real facts and talk to real people. But in New Mexico, a lawyer named Stephen Aarons tried a different, very risky approach.
He used a super-smart computer program, kind of like a super-powered chatbot (we call these 'AI' for Artificial Intelligence), to help him. But instead of just helping him organize facts, the AI *made up* witnesses and even fake police statements! It was like the computer was telling tall tales!
