Supercomputers and Smoky Air: A Giant AI Center Faces Court!

When thousands of supercomputers run day and night, they need tons of power—and neighbors say the fumes are too much!

Imagine a giant warehouse packed with tens of thousands of supercomputers thinking at lightning speed. That is xAI's data center in Memphis, Tennessee. To train giant artificial intelligence models, these chips need astronomical amounts of electrical power.

To keep all those processors humming without crashing the city's power grid, the company brought in large gas turbines to generate electricity right on site. But burning fuel produces smog and exhaust fumes that drift toward nearby homes.

A civil rights group called the NAACP stepped up and took the company to court, arguing that running those turbines violated the Clean Air Act without proper environmental permits. A judge just ruled that the lawsuit is allowed to officially move forward!
