Say Cheese, Planet Earth! The Very First Space Selfie
Imagine snapping a photo from so high up that you can actually see the curve of our giant world!
Long before satellites zipped around Earth and astronauts snapped selfies from the space station, nobody had ever seen our planet from above the atmosphere. That all changed on October 24, 1946, when a team of curious scientists strapped a movie camera onto a rocket and shot it straight into the sky!
The rocket blasted off from the desert in New Mexico, soaring 65 miles up. Up there, the blue sky turned completely black, and the camera snapped a picture every second and a half. For the very first time, human eyes could see fluffy white clouds resting against the gentle curve of our round planet.
